House Democrats Urge Trump to Restrict Chinese Automobiles
In a letter addressed to Trump, the lawmakers urged his administration not to allow Chinese automakers to enter the US market through vehicle imports or manufacturing operations as Washington and Beijing continue trade discussions.
"We urge you to maintain strong protections against Chinese automobiles and connected vehicle technologies and ensure that China does not gain access to our market through direct imports, local production, and other avenues of circumvention," they wrote.
The lawmakers also expressed concerns about what they described as extensive government support for China's automotive industry, including "massive" subsidies, state-backed investment, financing below market rates and other measures they argue provide Chinese manufacturers with an advantage in global competition.
They said these policies have helped create "significant" excess production capacity among Chinese automakers, allowing companies to pursue greater expansion into international markets through partnerships and other commercial arrangements.
"These subsidized Chinese automakers sell vehicles globally at unfair, artificially low prices that American manufacturers simply cannot compete with. In addition to government financing, Chinese automotive manufacturing relies on forced labor and other exploitative labor practices," they added.
