Philippines Deploys Aircraft, Ships Against Chinese Research Vessels

(MENAFN) The Philippines announces on Sunday that it is sending aircraft and naval vessels to confront and push away Chinese research ships it accuses of conducting unauthorized marine scientific activities, according to reports.

Authorities say the move follows the detection of four Chinese research vessels operating near Philippine waters, as reported by local media.

“We will not tolerate any illegal marine scientific research conducted without our government’s consent. We are deploying aircraft and vessels to challenge and drive away these unauthorized vessels to protect Philippine sovereignty and sovereign rights," Philippine Coast Guard commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan said.

The Philippine statement comes amid heightened tensions in the contested maritime region, where overlapping territorial claims continue to fuel disputes.

Separately, Chinese state media reports that five Philippine personnel land on a disputed feature in the South China Sea, an area Beijing refers to as part of its Nansha Islands, according to reports.

China’s coast guard says it responds to the incident and takes action “in accordance with the law,” describing the move as necessary to defend its territorial claims and maritime rights.
